Diagnostic pathology and research interests
Pathology informs diagnosis by examining changes in cells and tissues. Histopathology, cytology and supporting laboratory methods are interpreted alongside clinical information.
- 01
Histopathological examination
Biopsy and surgical specimens are sampled, processed and stained before microscopic examination. Cellular appearance, tissue architecture and relationships to surrounding tissue inform the pathology report.
- 02
Cytological assessment
Cytology examines cells obtained through fine-needle aspiration, smears or body fluids. Findings are interpreted with the sampling site, imaging and clinical context. Thyroid aspirates and other cytological specimens feature in diagnostic research.
- 03
Immunohistochemistry and markers
Immunohistochemistry uses staining to identify particular proteins in tissue. It can help characterise a tumour and investigate its origin. Staining patterns are interpreted with microscopic morphology and other findings.
- 04
Breast pathology
Breast biopsies and surgical specimens are assessed for lesion type, histological features and relevant markers. Hormone receptors, HER2 and relationships to surrounding tissue can inform treatment planning. Her thesis supervision includes CD34, lymphovascular invasion and SISH in breast tumours.
- 05
Gastrointestinal pathology
Biopsies from the stomach and bowel are examined for inflammation, tissue changes and tumours. Academic work on DNA repair proteins, immune cells and markers such as APOBEC3B in colorectal cancer supports diagnostic and biological assessment.
- 06
Thyroid and endocrine pathology
Thyroid nodules are assessed cytologically or histologically according to the specimen. Cell and tissue findings help distinguish benign changes, inflammation and tumours. Her scientific publications include thyroid disease and aspiration samples.
- 07
Molecular pathology and tumour biology
Molecular methods investigate genetic changes in cells. Used with histopathology and immunohistochemistry, they can characterise tumours in greater detail. Work involving HER2/SISH and DNA repair proteins relates to this field.

Pathology teaching and thesis supervision
Medical and specialist training connects pathological findings with clinical care. Prof. Dr. Hatice Karaman's academic responsibilities include pathology teaching and supervision of specialist trainees' research.
